St. Frumentius

St. Frumentius

Feast: October 27. St. Frumentius, Bishop and Apostle of Ethiopia. Frumentius was a native of Tyre. Around 330, while on a voyage that landed at Ethiopia, all members of the ship's party were killed except for Frumentius and his brother, St. Aedesius. They were taken to the king and became members of his court. When the king died, they remained to help the queen rule. They took the opportunity to introduce Christianity into the country and, at the same time, open trade to the West. When the king's sons were of age, Aedesius went to Tyre and ordained there. Frumentius traveled to Alexandria and asked St. Athanasius to send missionaries to Ethiopia, he returned there and converted many, including the king's sons. He died in Ethiopia around 380 and is venerated as the Apostle of Ethiopia. Although exposed to court life and power, St. Frumentius never lost sight of the universal goal of salvation. Like him, we are called to do all in our power to bring others to God.
